The core of the islet of Palea Kameni began to emerge around two thousand years ago, in 46-47 BC. In the years which followed, continuous volcanic activity shaped the contours of this outcrop of land in the middle of the caldera with its distinctive black rocks, giving the coastline its now familiar shape only a few centuries ago.

In the surrounding waters, and particularly in the bay of Agios Nikolaos, one can enjoy a swim in an otherworldly setting.
